June is Pride Month!!! Which I had no clue this was Pride Month until the second week of June….Whoops!
I have been DYING to write a piece celebrating fashion icons in lieu of Pride Month…. I’ve actually wanted to do this in lieu of other celebratory months but I’ve been slacking my bad!
For those who do not know exactly why we celebrate Pride Month, please check out the excerpt below from the Library of Congress: “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month (LGBT Pride Month) is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan. The Stonewall riots were a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. In the United States the last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as “Gay Pride Day,” but the actual day was flexible. In major cities across the nation the “day” soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events. Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and LGBT Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.”
Well let’s get to what his blog is all about shall we?! Here are a few of some of my favorite fashion icons who have not only changed the face of fashion but have also worker hard to promote love and equality for the LGBTQ Community:
Italian Fashion Designer and founder of Versace. Versace passed away in 1997 but his brand still lives on and ranks as one of the most sought out labels till this day!
American Fashion Designer and creator of “Tom Ford” label, Screenwriter, Film Director, Film Producer and former creative director for Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent.
Fashion designer and creator of “Alexander McQueen” label and Former head designer for Givenchy. McQueen tragically took his own life in 2010 but his designs live on forever!
Fashion Designer and founder of the Valentino SpA brand and company. Valentino has influenced a generation of designers, and his gowns are frequently seen on the runway.
Yves Saint Laurent
French fashion designer who literally REVOLUTIONIZED fashion!
Fashion icon known for her original rock style and promoting healthy body image.
And last but certainly not least, Freja Beha Erichsen
From Roskilde, Denmark, Freja is a fashion model that has walked for top designers such as, Gucci, Calvin Klein and Chanel.
While those are just a few designers and icons within the fashion world there are a lot more that have not only contributed to the overall progress of fashion but they’ve become icons within the LGBTQ community along with a voice to stand up for equality.
I want to personally give love and thanks to everyone who stands for love and unity we need more of that!
